2016 MDC Pallid Sturgeon Broodstock Sampling Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to help the Missouri Department of Conservation with pallid sturgeon broodstock collection efforts on the Missouri River near St. Joseph.  Volunteers will be helping set and pull trot lines to collect breeding stock for pallid sturgeon restocking and restoration efforts.

  • March 29-April 15 at French Bottom boat access in St. Joseph
  • March 29-April 15 at Nodaway Island boat ramp north of St. Joseph

A typical day runs from 8am – 4pm and consists of baiting hooks with nightcrawlers, setting and pulling eight 200 foot long trot lines (40 hooks per line), and handling fish (includes taking fish off hooks, measuring and weighing fish). Bring your own rain gear (even if it’s not raining, you will get wet handing the fish), watershoes/knee boots, drinks and lunch. Participants will meet the MDC crews at the boat ramp they signed up for (either French Bottoms or Nodaway Island). We will provide lifejackets, gloves, sunscreen, a free t-shirt, and a fun day on the river!
